5 Days of Chess

This summer 2024 we shall be involved with '5 Days of Chess (5DC)' events in downtown Boston. '5DC' is a series of chess events consisting of four FREE chess workshops followed by a FREE chess tournament. All events at the Civic Pavilion Hall, City Hall Plaza, Boston and are supported in part by a grant from the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture.

Presenters
A US Chess Federation titled player will guide participants at each workshop covering elements of the opening, the middle game and endgame. This year our presenters include GM Leonid Kritz, WGM Nadya Kosintseva and NM Ryan Young.

Target Audience
5DC workshops are suitable for players who have mastered the basics of chess and are now seeking to get to intermediate level. Suitable for those with ratings between 800 and 1,400. Adults and juniors ages 10 and up. The tournament is open to everyone regardless of their rating.

Location
The Civic Pavilion at Boston City Hall Plaza, Downtown Boston. The closest T stop is Haymarket (Orange Line). You can also get off the T at Government Center (Green Line) and follow the signs to the Civic Pavilion. The Civic Pavilion is directly opposite Boston Public Market.​​​​​​​​​​​​​

Workshop Details, Dates & Times
Each workshop starts on a Sunday at 2pm and lasts 1 to 1.5 hours followed by casual chess until 5pm.

July 7: Developing a Plan (GM Nadya Kosintseva)
July 14: Checkmating Patterns (NM Ryan Young)
July 28: Opening Principles (GM Leonid Kritz)
Aug 4: How to Improve Your Chess (NM Ryan Young)

​​Important Notes
All events take place in a location open to the public. Keep your belongings with you at all times. Juniors require parental supervision. There will be photography at the event and photos may be used in social media and by the press.

Tournament (Sunday, August 11, 2:00pm)
You've brushed up some chess theory through the workshops and practiced with casual chess after each workshop. Now is time to test those new founded skills. The final day of the 5DC series is a tournament, open to everyone, regardless of level. The tournament has both a rated and unrated section. The tournament capacity is approximately 80-100 people.
