Jamie Willams (founder and organizer) was the recipient of a grant in 2023 and 2024 from the Mayor's Office of Arts and Culture to coordinate and run chess workshops and tournaments in downtown Boston. Jamie has pledged to donate the sets and clocks bought with the grant to JP Chess, as and when needed. Consequently, JP Chess will not need to purchase sets nor clocks for some time.
Risks
-
The club is reliant on the availability of rent-free premises. The club must maintain a good relationship with existing venue provider and ensure that it is a win-win situation for venue provider and J.P. Chess.
-
The club is reliant on a few key persons for organization and administration. The number of active organizers has been reduced to just 2 individuals. More volunteers and involvement from others are needed to spread responsibilities and reduce this risk.
-
COVID restrictions, if implemented, can impact on indoor gatherings
